Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral'

How to grow Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' in NZ

Grow Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' in full sun in well drained soil. Choose an open position with good airflow, as this helps keep the foliage healthy and encourages a long flowering display. Improve heavy soil with compost and coarse material before planting to ensure excess water drains away freely. Water thoroughly after planting, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings as roots establish. Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' performs well in garden beds, raised planters, and pots. A sunny site with free draining conditions will produce the strongest growth, fragrance, and flower display.

Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' care tips

Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' is easy to care for when grown in sunny, well drained conditions. Water during prolonged dry periods, especially while the plant is young or growing in a container, but avoid leaving the roots wet. Remove faded flowers regularly to keep the plant tidy and encourage further blooms. Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy foliage and flowering. Trim back tired flowering stems after the main display to encourage fresh growth. Good drainage is especially important through winter, as wet soil can affect the crown and roots.

Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' size, spacing, and growth rate

Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' generally grows about 30 cm to 40 cm tall and 30 cm to 40 cm wide, forming a compact clump of fine foliage with flowers held above. Space plants approximately 30 cm to 40 cm apart for a full border display while allowing good airflow around each plant. Growth is moderate in warm sunny conditions, with flowering continuing over a long season when spent blooms are removed. Its tidy size makes Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' ideal for smaller gardens, sunny pots, border edges, and planting near outdoor seating areas.

Landscaping uses for Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral'

Dianthus 'Sugar Plum Coral' is ideal for sunny borders, cottage style gardens, patio pots, raised planters, and fragrant planting near paths and entrances.
