How to grow Darmera peltata in NZ

Darmera peltata grows best in partial shade or full sun where the soil remains consistently moist. Plant into fertile, humus rich, well drained soil that has been improved with compost. Water regularly, especially during dry weather, and apply mulch to conserve soil moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser each spring to encourage healthy growth.

Darmera peltata care tips

Remove spent flower stems after flowering and tidy away old or damaged foliage as required. Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, particularly during hot weather. Divide established clumps every few years during winter if additional plants are desired or to rejuvenate overcrowded clumps.

Darmera peltata size, spacing, and growth rate

Darmera peltata typically grows 90 to 150 centimetres tall when flowering and spreads 90 to 120 centimetres wide. Space plants around 1 metre apart to allow the large leaves to develop fully. Growth is moderate, with plants gradually forming impressive clumps over time.

Landscaping uses for Darmera peltata

Darmera peltata is ideal for planting beside ponds, streams, wetlands, woodland gardens, and shaded borders. The dramatic foliage provides bold texture and combines beautifully with hostas, ferns, astilbes, and other moisture loving perennials.
