Astrantia Claret is an herbaceous perennial grown for its impressive flowers. Balls resembling pin cushions made up of showy, dark red flowers rise above the foliage during spring and summer. They are held on slender stems above the mid-green leaves. This plant will grow to about 60 cm tall and the same wide and performs best on a well-drained site in a full sun or partial shade position. Plants are tolerant of heavier soils, light frost, and coastal environments. Astrantia Claret is commonly included in border plantings, cottage gardens, grown in a container, or added to a mixed planting. A mass planting is a must with this plant and the flowers are great for dried flower arrangements.
