How to grow Artemisia absinthium in NZ

To grow Artemisia absinthium in NZ, plant it in a sunny position with excellent drainage. Light sandy or gravelly soils are ideal, as this plant does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Good airflow helps maintain healthy foliage and long term performance.

Artemisia absinthium care tips

Artemisia absinthium is very easy to care for once established. Avoid overwatering and heavy feeding, as excess moisture and nutrients reduce foliage quality. Light pruning in spring encourages fresh silver growth and keeps plants compact. Remove spent stems as needed to maintain shape. This plant is tolerant of drought wind and coastal conditions, making it ideal for low input gardens.

Artemisia absinthium size, spacing, and growth rate

Artemisia absinthium typically grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres tall and about 1 metre wide. Space plants at least 1 metre apart to allow good airflow and full development. It has a moderate growth rate, establishing steadily in the first year before producing stronger growth in warmer seasons. Occasional pruning helps manage size and prevents plants becoming woody.
