Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet'

How to grow Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' in NZ

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' grows best in full sun and well drained soil, excelling in warm and dry environments. Choose an open, sunny position to encourage abundant flowering and compact growth. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils, as Arctotis prefers lean, free draining ground. Water during establishment, then reduce once mature. It performs well in coastal, inland, and exposed gardens across New Zealand.

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' care tips

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' requires minimal maintenance thanks to its hardy nature. Remove old flowers to encourage continuous blooming through the season. Trim lightly if plants become stretched or uneven. Avoid overwatering and excessive fertiliser, as these reduce flowering performance. It is naturally resistant to pests and diseases, making it ideal for low care gardening.

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' size, spacing, and growth rate

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' typically reaches twenty to thirty centimetres tall and spreads up to fifty centimetres wide. Its spreading, mat forming habit makes it excellent for ground cover or filling gaps between taller plants. Space plants forty to fifty centimetres apart to allow for natural expansion. It grows quickly in warm conditions and forms a dense carpet that suppresses weeds.

Landscaping uses for Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet'

Arctotis 'Cherry Velvet' is perfect for sunny borders, coastal gardens, rockeries, and dry banks. Its deep cherry red blooms pair beautifully with silver foliage plants, succulents, grasses, and other drought tolerant species. It thrives in hot, exposed areas including slopes and driveways. This variety is also excellent in mass planting to create a bold, luxurious colour display.
