How to grow Aquilegia vulgaris in NZ

Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. While tolerant of a range of soil types, it prefers moist conditions during active growth. Water regularly through dry spells, especially in the first year after planting. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage further flowering and reduce self-seeding if desired.

Aquilegia vulgaris care tips

Cut back old foliage in late autumn or early winter to tidy the plant and promote fresh growth in spring. Apply a light layer of mulch to protect the crown in cooler regions. Fertilise with a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring. Watch for leaf miner damage and remove affected leaves promptly.

Aquilegia vulgaris size, spacing, and growth rate

Grows 60–90 cm tall with a spread of 30–40 cm. Space plants 30–40 cm apart in mixed borders or mass plantings. It has a moderate growth rate and will often self-sow if allowed.

Landscaping uses for Aquilegia vulgaris

Columbine is perfect for cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, and woodland plantings. Its airy blooms pair beautifully with other late-spring perennials like foxgloves, delphiniums, and peonies. It is excellent for naturalistic plantings and attracts beneficial pollinators to the garden.
