Elephant Ear

Alocasia odora is an herbaceous perennial is grown for its impressively large foliage. The massive, arrow shaped leaves are dark green, lush, and very showy. It typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide, performing best on a well-drained, frost free, sheltered site in full sun or partial shade. It may die back in winter but will generally regrow again in the spring. This Alocasia is commonly used in mixed plantings, maintained in a container, added to tropical gardens, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, or mass planted around the base of larger trees and shrubs.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Alocasia odora (Elephant Ear)? We are here to help.

I have these growing (self seeded) on a steep bank on the coromandel peninsula. . Local friends are telling me they are an invasive weed and should remove them. Your thoughts?

Kia ora, Alocasia odora is not generally listed as a highly invasive species in NZ. On a steep bank it can spread, but unless it’s crowding out native plants or causing erosion issues, removal isn’t usually urgent. If you’re concerned about local biodiversity, you could keep an eye on it and manage any large patches. Many thanks.
