How to grow Allium giganteum in NZ

To grow Allium giganteum successfully in NZ, plant bulbs in autumn in a sunny position with free draining soil. Plant bulbs around 15 to 20 cm deep with the pointed end facing up. Avoid heavy wet soils, as bulbs can rot in waterlogged conditions. Water after planting, then allow natural rainfall to do most of the work until growth appears in spring.

Allium giganteum care tips

Allium giganteum is very easy to care for once planted. Water during prolonged dry periods while in active growth, but avoid excess moisture. Apply a general fertiliser in early spring to support flowering. After flowering, leave foliage to die back naturally as this feeds the bulb for the following season. Remove spent flower heads if desired for a tidy appearance.

Allium giganteum size, spacing, and growth rate

Allium giganteum typically grows to around 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall when in flower, with flower heads reaching up to 15 cm across. Space bulbs approximately 25 to 30 cm apart to allow good airflow and visual impact. It has a moderate growth rate, emerging in spring and reaching full height by early summer before going dormant later in the season.

Landscaping uses for Allium giganteum

Allium giganteum is ideal for mixed borders cottage gardens and formal planting schemes. It works well planted in groups for maximum impact or scattered through perennial beds for vertical interest. The tall stems rise above lower plants, creating depth and structure. Flower heads are also excellent for cutting and drying, extending their decorative value indoors.
