How to grow Allium caeruleum in NZ

To grow Allium caeruleum in NZ, plant the bulbs in a sunny position with free draining soil. Full sun encourages the strongest stems and best flower colour. Plant bulbs in autumn at a shallow depth to allow good establishment over winter. Water after planting and keep soil moderately moist during growth. Avoid heavy wet soils as good drainage is essential.

Allium caeruleum care tips

Allium caeruleum is very easy to care for once planted. Water during dry periods while in active growth, then reduce watering after flowering. Feeding is rarely required, though a light spring application of general fertiliser can support flowering. Leave foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for the following season.

Allium caeruleum size, spacing, and growth rate

Allium caeruleum typically grows to around 60 to 80 cm tall with flower heads about 5 to 7 cm wide. Space bulbs approximately 10 to 15 cm apart to allow clump formation. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually increases in number over time. This compact habit makes it easy to incorporate into mixed plantings.

Landscaping uses for Allium caeruleum

Allium caeruleum is ideal for borders cottage gardens and mixed perennial beds. The blue flower heads provide gentle contrast alongside pink yellow and white flowering plants. It works well planted in groups for visual impact and also suits naturalistic planting schemes. This variety is excellent for cutting and attracts bees and other beneficial insects.
