How to grow Agapanthus praecox in NZ

To grow Agapanthus praecox in NZ, plant it in a sunny to partially shaded position with free draining soil. Full sun encourages the best flowering, though it will tolerate light shade. Planting in spring or autumn allows good establishment. Water regularly during the first year, then only during extended dry periods. This plant is tolerant of coastal conditions once established.

Agapanthus praecox care tips

Agapanthus praecox is very easy to care for once established. Water occasionally during dry spells and feed lightly in spring with a general fertiliser to support flowering. Remove spent flower heads to keep plants tidy and prevent unwanted self seeding. Divide clumps every few years if flowering declines or plants become overcrowded.

Agapanthus praecox size, spacing, and growth rate

Agapanthus praecox typically grows to around 80 to 100 cm tall when in flower and spreads 60 to 80 cm wide. Space plants approximately 60 cm apart to allow airflow and clump development. It has a moderate growth rate and forms dense clumps over time. Regular division helps maintain plant health and flowering performance.

Landscaping uses for Agapanthus praecox

Agapanthus praecox is ideal for borders mass planting roadside gardens and container growing. The bold foliage provides year round structure while the summer flowers add height and colour.
