Actaea simplex Brunette is a variety of the commonly known, Baneberry, and is grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. This herbaceous perennial produces scented, bottlebrush-like, white flowers on slender stems which rise above the foliage from summer through autumn. The foliage comprises lush, dark purple-black leaves which provides a great contrast to the flowers. It typically grows to 1 m tall and 80 cm wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained site with good summer moisture. It is tolerant of light frost, coastal environments, and partial shade though in this instance leaf colouring will be less intense. Actaea simplex Brunette is commonly used in border or mixed plantings, included in cottage gardens, maintained in a container, or mass planted around the base of larger trees and shrubs. It is a great plant for adding interest and year-round colour.
