Actaea simplex Atropurpurea, commonly known as Bugbane, is an herbaceous perennial grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. In spring it produces bottlebrush-like, pale pink-white flowers on slender stems which rise above the foliage. The foliage comprises lush, brown-purple leaves which provides a great contrast to the flowers. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 75 cm wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained site with good summer moisture. It is tolerant of light frost, coastal environments, and partial shade though in this instance leaf colouring will be less intense. Actaea simplex Atropurpurea is commonly used in border or mixed plantings, maintained in a container, included in a cottage garden, or planted around larger trees and shrubs. It is a great plant for adding interest and colour year-round.
