Actaea simplex, commonly known as the Bugbane Plant or Snakeroot Plant, is an herbaceous perennial is grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. It produces scented, bottlebrush-like, white flowers on long and slender stems which rise above the foliage from summer through autumn. The foliage comprises lush, deep green leaves tinged with bronze and these provide a great backdrop to the flowers. It typically grows to 90 cm tall and 60 cm wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained site with good summer moisture. It is tolerant of light frost, coastal environments, and partial shade though in this instance leaf colouring will be less intense. Actaea simplex is commonly used in borders, mixed plantings, grown in a container, or planted around the base of larger trees and shrubs.
