Actaea Black Negligee, commonly known as Black Bugbane or the Black Snakeroot Plant, is grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. It produces fragrant, bottlebrush-like, pale pink-white flowers on slender stems in spring which rise above the foliage. The foliage comprises lush, purple-black leaves which provides a stunning contrast to the flowers. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 75 cm wide, performing best when grown in full sun on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of moderate frost, coastal environments, and partial shade, though in this instance leaf colouring will be less intense. In cooler climates it may die back during winter to regrow when conditions warm. Actaea Black Negligee is commonly used in border or mixed plantings, included in cottage gardens, maintained in a container, or mass planted around the base of larger trees and shrubs. It is a great plant for adding interest and year-round colour.
