Achillea 'Vintage Wine'

How to grow Achillea 'Vintage Wine' in NZ

Grow Achillea 'Vintage Wine' in full sun with free draining soil. It thrives in open positions and suits dry gardens, cottage borders, and exposed areas where other perennials may struggle. Improve heavy soil with compost and grit before planting, then water deeply to help roots establish. Keep the soil lightly moist through the first growing season, then reduce watering as plants become established. Achillea 'Vintage Wine' is drought tolerant once mature and performs best when the soil does not stay wet. A sunny site encourages sturdy stems, healthy foliage, and a long flowering season.

Achillea 'Vintage Wine' care tips

Achillea 'Vintage Wine' is a low maintenance perennial that needs little attention once established. Water young plants during extended dry weather, but avoid overwatering as achillea prefers free draining conditions. Remove spent flower heads to encourage further blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. Cut stems back after flowering or in late autumn when foliage starts to fade. Divide established clumps every few years in spring if they become crowded or lose vigour. Avoid heavy feeding, as rich soil can create soft growth. Achillea 'Vintage Wine' will provide reliable colour with simple seasonal care.

Achillea 'Vintage Wine' size, spacing, and growth rate

Achillea 'Vintage Wine' typically grows about 50 cm to 70 cm tall when flowering and spreads around 40 cm to 50 cm wide. Space plants approximately 40 cm to 50 cm apart for a full border display with enough room for air movement. It has a moderate growth rate, forming attractive clumps that become stronger each season. Planting in groups creates a bold colour effect and gives borders a natural flowing look. Achillea 'Vintage Wine' is a useful mid border perennial that adds height, texture, and dependable summer flowers without demanding extensive maintenance.

Landscaping uses for Achillea 'Vintage Wine'

Achillea 'Vintage Wine' is ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, dry landscapes, and meadow style planting. Its deep flower colour pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, silver foliage, and softer flowering perennials, creating contrast and movement through summer. Use it in groups for a stronger visual impact or thread it through mixed borders for a relaxed natural effect. The long stemmed flowers are also excellent for fresh arrangements. Achillea 'Vintage Wine' brings lasting colour and texture to gardens where a tough, easy care perennial is needed.
