Washingtonia filifera Details

Washingtonia filifera, commonly known as the California Fan Palm or Desert Fan Palm, is one of the more popular Palm trees. It features a large crown of feathery, mid-green fronds which are are held on a thick and fibrous trunk. The trunk is often ringed with old leaf scars. White flowers are borne as clusters in summer and result in brown-black berries. This stately and distinctive tree typically grows to 12 m tall and 6 m wide. It grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, and will tolerate some wind, extended dry periods, and moderate frost. Washingtonia filifera makes for a fantastic specimen and is great for lining entranceways and avenues, and is often used in mixed plantings, tropical gardens, and parks.
