Cycas thouarsii

Cycas thouarsii, commonly known as the Madagascar Sago Palm or Madagascar Cycad, grows with a rugged trunk that is topped with a whorl of feathery fronds. It grows symmetrically with glossy, dark green fronds held in a gently arching manner, reaching 2 m in height and the same width. Cycas thouarsii makes an excellent specimen and is commonly added to tropical plantings, maintained in a container, planted around a pool or other living areas, added to a mixed planting, or used in building foyer plantings.

How to grow Cycas thouarsii in NZ

To grow Cycas thouarsii in NZ, select a sunny to partially shaded location with free draining soil. It is best suited to frost free regions but can tolerate light frost once established. Water regularly during dry spells but avoid overwatering, as cycads dislike soggy conditions. Feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage healthy foliage. With the right care, Cycas thouarsii establishes steadily and provides year round structure.

Cycas thouarsii care tips

Caring for Cycas thouarsii is straightforward. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering during cooler months. Remove old or damaged fronds at the base to maintain a tidy appearance. Feed twice yearly with a fertiliser designed for cycads or palms to support lush growth. Sago Palm is generally low maintenance, pest resistant, and hardy, making it an excellent choice for NZ gardeners seeking impact with ease.

Cycas thouarsii size, spacing, and growth rate

Cycas thouarsii is a slow growing cycad that typically reaches 2–4 metres tall with a similar spread over many years. Its sturdy trunk and crown of arching fronds create a bold, symmetrical display. Allow at least 2–3 metres of space when planting in gardens to accommodate its eventual size. Growth is slow, but its longevity and striking form make Cycas thouarsii a valuable feature for landscapes and large pots.

Landscaping uses for Cycas thouarsii

Cycas thouarsii is perfect for adding structure and tropical character to NZ gardens. It works well as a specimen plant in lawns, courtyards, or entrances, and also complements modern and subtropical landscapes. Its bold foliage pairs beautifully with other tropical plants, and it thrives in both garden beds and large containers. Cycas thouarsii is an excellent choice for creating a dramatic focal point in residential and commercial settings.
