Ophiopogon japonicus 'Kyoto' care

The most essential part of Ophiopogon japonicus 'Kyoto' care is to ensure they have well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged at any time. This, along with overwatering, is the leading cause of plants failing to perform or dying. The following critical elements are weed control, and The Plant Company recommends spreading an organic mulch around the plants after they are planted. They should be fed in spring with a general fertiliser. At this time, any dead leaves can be removed. The plants are generally not trimmed aside from removing unsightly leaves. They rarely suffer from any pests or diseases, but you may want to keep an eye out for mealybugs and scale insects. Overall, they are a straightforward plant to care for.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Ophiopogon Kyoto? We are here to help.

I have an indoor atrium area around a tall stairwell that has plenty of light & dry warmth. I tried growing the moss (that's used in Japanese gardens) but it slowly died over several months despite being planted in new quality potting mix and watered normally like any house plant. So I thought maybe Mondo dwarf plants would be hardier for this indoor area. I want the floor area like a living carpet, i.e. like moss or maybe better still the dwarf mondo grass. Your thoughts please. Thanks Julia

The Kyoto mondo is probably the closest option for what you are wanting to achieve. A moss-like option is Scleranthus.
