Growing Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon' Successfully in NZ

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon' (Black Mondo Grass) grows well across most regions of New Zealand. It prefers well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. This slow-spreading, clump-forming plant is perfect for borders, edging, or ground cover. While tolerant of light frost and dry periods once established, it performs best with regular watering during periods of drought. ‘Black Dragon’ adds dramatic contrast to gardens and grows well in both containers and open ground.

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon' Care Tips

Water regularly during the first year to help ‘Black Dragon’ it establish. Once established, it tolerates dry spells but benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry weather. Plant in well-drained soil and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Trim back old or untidy foliage in late winter to encourage fresh growth. It requires little fertiliser, but a light feed in spring can support vigour. Suitable for containers, edging, or ground cover in sun or part shade.

Plant Size and Spacing

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Black Dragon' typically grows 15–25 cm tall and 20–30 cm wide. For ground cover or edging, space plants 20–30 cm apart. In mass plantings, tighter spacing (20 cm) will create a dense mat more quickly, while wider spacing (30 cm) allows for gradual spread.
