Libertia mooreae

Libertia mooreae, commonly known as Moore’s Iris, is a NZ native grown for its beautiful, white flower spikes which stand above the foliage. The flowers in spring result in attractive, green seed capsules. The foliage comprises short, erect, green leaves with yellow veins. It grows as a clump to about 40 cm tall and the same wide, but will colonise a larger area with its spreading roots. Libertia mooreae is commonly mass-planted, added to mixed plantings, used in borders, planted around the base of larger trees, incorporated into “white” gardens, or used in cottage gardens.

Growing Libertia mooreae successfully in NZ

Libertia mooreae, a native New Zealand iris-like plant, thrives in a variety of garden conditions. It performs best in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade exposure. This hardy perennial is ideal for low-maintenance gardens, native plantings, and mass landscaping. It tolerates dry spells once established but appreciates occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. For best results, plant in groups and apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Libertia mooreae Care Tips

Libertia mooreae is easy to care for and thrives in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade. Water regularly during dry periods in the first year, then only occasionally once the plant is established. Apply slow-release fertiliser in spring and remove old leaves or spent flower stalks to keep it tidy. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and control the overall size of the plant.

Plant Size and Spacing

Libertia mooreae typically grows to around 60 cm tall and 45–60 cm wide. For mass planting or borders, space plants approximately 40–50 cm apart to allow for natural clump expansion while maintaining good airflow.
