Growing Libertia edgariae Successfully in NZ

Libertia edgariae is a hardy New Zealand native that grows well in full sun to partial shade and free-draining soil. This compact, evergreen plant forms neat clumps of narrow, flax-like leaves and produces clusters of small white flowers in spring, followed by orange seed capsules. It’s ideal for mass planting, borders, and native gardens. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, then only during extended dry periods. Mulch to retain moisture and control weeds, and remove spent flower stems to keep the plant tidy. It thrives in a wide range of conditions and requires minimal maintenance once established.

Libertia edgariae Care Tips

Libertia edgariae is low-maintenance and well-suited to New Zealand gardens. Plant in full sun or partial shade with free-draining soil, and water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal care. Remove spent flower stems and old leaves to keep the plant tidy. Apply a light dressing of native plant fertiliser in spring if needed. It performs well in coastal, urban, and rural settings.

Plant Size and Spacing

Libertia edgariae typically grows to 30–40 cm tall and 30–40 cm wide, forming a compact, clump-forming habit. It has a moderate growth rate, gradually filling out over time. For mass planting or borders, space plants 30–40 cm apart to achieve full coverage while allowing room for airflow and natural shape. This spacing also works well in native gardens, rockeries, and underplantings.
