Growing Festuca novae-zelandiae Successfully in NZ

Festuca novae-zelandiae, commonly known as New Zealand Fescue, is a hardy native tussock suited to dry, open landscapes. It thrives in full sun with free-draining soil and is ideal for coastal gardens, rocky outcrops, and restoration projects. This grass is drought-tolerant and copes well with poor soils and frost. The delicate foliage adds texture and movement to native plantings. Once established, it requires little maintenance, making it perfect for low-input or naturalistic landscapes.

Festuca novae-zelandiae Care Tips

Plant Festuca novae-zelandiae in full sun and well-drained soil to promote vigorous growth and prevent root rot. It tolerates poor, sandy, or rocky soils and doesn’t require fertiliser. Water during establishment, but reduce watering once the plant is established, as it prefers drier conditions. Remove dead or old foliage annually in late winter to maintain its tidy form. This species is generally pest- and disease-free, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for NZ gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Festuca novae-zelandiae typically grows to around 30–45 cm tall and 30–40 cm wide, forming tight, upright tussocks. When planting, space individuals about 30–40 cm apart to allow for natural spread and airflow. This spacing is ideal for mass plantings, erosion control, and native revegetation where uniform coverage and textural contrast are desired.
