Chionochloa flavicans, commonly known as Miniature Toetoe, is a popular and versatile, NZ native grass featuring flowing, green foliage. The striking feature of this plant are the compact flower plumes produced during early summer which age to become a tawny brown. These remain on the plant and attractive for several months and are often used as a cut flower. Miniature ToeToe typically grows to 90 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods once established, as well as wind, frost, and cool climates. Chionochloa flavicans is commonly planted alongside water features such as ponds and streams, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, included in borders, used in rock gardens, or maintained in a container.
