Pecan carya 'Lucas'

How to grow Pecan carya 'Lucas' in NZ

Grow Pecan carya 'Lucas' in full sun with deep, fertile soil that drains freely. Select a permanent sunny position with deep soil and room for the mature canopy. A compatible pecan such as 'Hirschi' can improve cross pollination when flowering periods overlap. Check the root zone regularly while new growth develops so young plants establish steadily. Prepare the planting area carefully before introducing the plant to its permanent position. Allow enough room to reach the root zone for watering during the first growing season.

Pecan carya 'Lucas' care tips

Care for Pecan carya 'Lucas' by matching attention to its growing season and natural habit. Water deeply through dry periods while the tree is young. Remove damaged or crossing branches, maintain an open framework, and collect fallen nuts promptly when ripe. Check established plants regularly so damaged growth or developing problems can be addressed promptly. Adjust watering to the weather and growing conditions rather than following a fixed calendar. Keep maintenance practical and consistent so the plant remains attractive as it develops.

Pecan carya 'Lucas' size, spacing, and growth rate

Pecan carya 'Lucas' has an expected height of around 9 m in garden conditions, with larger growth possible over time and a spread of at least 3 m, with the canopy broadening as the tree ages. Allow at least 6 to 8 m when arranging plants, with enough additional room for access and the mature outline. Its growth is moderate. A smaller nursery plant takes time to reach mature dimensions, so plan for its eventual development.

Landscaping uses for Pecan carya 'Lucas'

Use Pecan carya 'Lucas' in large gardens, nut orchards, productive shelter planting, and rural properties. Repeat it through the planting to create a coherent display, or use a single specimen as a focal point. Combine it with plants that enjoy comparable light and soil conditions for a balanced garden scheme. Choose a position where its distinguishing features can be enjoyed from nearby paths or seating. Leave enough open space around the display for its natural character to remain visible.
