These industry standard labels are made from plastic infused paper which makes them both tough and waterproof. They are widely used across the nursery industry and can be printed onto. They come in white, light blue, or pink.

You can use a pen but the ink tends to fade when exposed to constant water and sun. We use wax pencils and that lasts.
They are wax paper so I wouldn't advise that.
