How to grow the String of Dolphins Plant in NZ

String of Dolphins (Senecio peregrinus) grows best in New Zealand when planted in a free-draining succulent mix and placed in a warm, bright spot with indirect sunlight. Water only when the soil has completely dried out, as it is drought-tolerant and prone to root rot if overwatered. Feed with a diluted succulent fertiliser during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth. Protect the plant from frost and avoid overly humid conditions for best results.

String of Dolphins care tips

String of Dolphins is easy to maintain with the proper care. Place it in bright, indirect light and avoid prolonged direct sun. Water sparingly, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, and reduce watering in winter. Use a well-draining succulent mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes. Feed with a diluted succulent fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Trim back any leggy or damaged stems to keep the plant full and healthy.

Can you grow String of Dolpins from a cutting?

Yes, you can grow String of Dolphins from a cutting. Take a healthy stem cutting about 8–10 cm long and remove the bottom leaves to expose the nodes. Allow the cutting to dry for a day so the cut end calluses over, then place it on or just below the surface of a free-draining succulent mix. Keep the soil lightly moist until roots develop, which usually takes 2–3 weeks, then water sparingly as you would a mature plant.
