Hoya polyneura (Fishtail Hoya)

Hoya polyneura, commonly known as the Fishtail Hoya, is widely grown as an indoor plant. It produces elongated, dark green leaves which are held off trailing stems. The appearance of the foliage resembles scales of a fish, hence the common name. During summer, the plants will often produce showy clusters of waxy, cream-coloured flowers with a red centre. It typically grows to 10 cm tall and will trail to 50 cm or more. Hoya polyneura is commonly grown indoors in an office or the like, where a fresh, delightful, and elegant plant is required. It can also be grown outdoors in favourable environments.

How to grow Hoya polyneura (Fishtail Hoya) in NZ

Hoya polyneura thrives indoors in a warm, sheltered spot with bright, indirect light. Please protect it from direct sun and cold drafts. Use a free-draining mix, such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and indoor potting mix. Water when the top layer of soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter. This plant enjoys moderate to high humidity, so mist regularly or use a humidity tray. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser, and keep it slightly root-bound for best flowering results.

Place in bright, indirect light and avoid direct sun exposure. Use a well-draining potting mix with perlite or orchid bark. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, and reduce watering during cooler months. Maintain moderate to high humidity and mist occasionally to support healthy foliage.
