Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant)

How to grow Hoya carnosa in NZ

To grow Hoya carnosa in NZ, place it in bright, indirect light and keep it in a warm, sheltered space away from frost. Use a free-draining potting mix and water only when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, reducing watering in winter. Maintain moderate humidity and feed monthly during spring and summer with a liquid fertiliser. Avoid overwatering or frequent repotting, as this plant prefers to be slightly root-bound.

Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant) care tips

Place in bright, indirect light and avoid harsh sun. Use a free-draining mix, and let the top of the soil dry between waterings. Water less in winter. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Maintain moderate humidity and avoid frequent repotting. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant. Keep old flower spurs, as new blooms often emerge from the same spot. This plant thrives when slightly root-bound.

Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant) size, spacing, and growth rate

Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant) typically reaches about 15 cm tall and 30 cm wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 30 cm between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.
