How to grow Dracaena 'Massangeana' in NZ

To grow Dracaena 'Massangeana' (also known as the Happy Plant) in New Zealand, place it in a warm, sheltered spot with bright, indirect light. It thrives in both indoor and frost-free outdoor areas. Use well-drained potting mix and keep the soil slightly moist, watering only when the top few centimetres are dry. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Protect from cold drafts and frost, and wipe the leaves occasionally to keep them clean and healthy.

Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana' care tips

Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana' prefers bright, indirect light and grows best in well-drained soil. Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Store it in a warm, humid environment, away from cold drafts and direct sunlight. Fertilise monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, and prune back tall stems if needed to maintain a bushier shape. Repot every 2–3 years.

Is Dracaena 'Massangeana' safe for cats?

No, Dracaena 'Massangeana' is not safe for cats. It contains compounds called saponins, which are toxic to cats if ingested. Symptoms of poisoning may include vomiting, drooling, loss of appetite, and dilated pupils. If your cat chews on this plant and shows any of these signs, contact a vet immediately.
