What are the key features of Calathea Medallion?

Calathea Medallion (Calathea veitchiana) is renowned for its large, round leaves adorned with striking patterns in shades of green and silver, contrasted by a rich purple underside. This eye-catching foliage makes it a standout feature in any indoor plant collection. The plant typically grows up to 50 cm tall, making it suitable for tabletops, shelves, or as a low statement piece. It thrives in low to medium indirect light, making it ideal for indoor spaces with limited sunlight. Calathea Medallion is also non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe and attractive choice for family homes. Additionally, it helps improve indoor air quality by acting as a natural air purifier.

Calathea Medallion care guide

Calathea Medallion, also known as Calathea veitchiana, is a stunning tropical houseplant known for its round, patterned leaves with bold green tops and rich purple undersides. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil. Use a well-draining potting mix and avoid letting the plant sit in water. High humidity is essential for healthy growth—regular misting or placing it near a humidifier helps prevent leaf curling and browning. Keep temperatures between 18°C and 24°C, away from cold drafts or direct sunlight. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. With the right care, Calathea Medallion will reward you with lush, vibrant foliage all year round.

Why does my Calathea Medallion have brown edges?

Brown edges on your Calathea Medallion are often a sign of low humidity, inconsistent watering, or poor water quality. This tropical plant thrives in humid conditions, so dry indoor air—especially during winter or near heaters—can cause the leaf edges to dry out and turn brown. Underwatering or letting the soil dry out too much between waterings can also stress the plant. Additionally, tap water containing fluoride, chlorine, or mineral salts may damage the sensitive foliage. Overexposure to direct sunlight or over-fertilising can contribute to browning as well. To prevent this, keep your plant in a warm, humid environment with bright, indirect light, water consistently with filtered or rainwater, and avoid excessive fertiliser.

Benefits of Calathea Medallion

Calathea Medallion offers both aesthetic and practical benefits for indoor spaces. Its bold, patterned foliage with deep green and purple tones adds a vibrant, tropical touch to homes and offices, making it a standout decorative plant. As a natural air purifier, it helps improve indoor air quality by filtering toxins and releasing oxygen. Calathea Medallion is also non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe choice for family homes. Additionally, its preference for lower light and high humidity makes it well-suited for bathrooms, bedrooms, and other shaded areas where many plants struggle to thrive. With its easy-care nature and visual appeal, it’s an ideal choice for plant lovers of all experience levels.

Why does my Calathea Medallion have curled leaves?

Calathea Medallion curled leaves are usually a sign that the plant is stressed, and this can often result from low humidity, as Calatheas are tropical plants that require a consistently moist environment. When humidity drops, especially in winter or dry indoor conditions, the leaves may curl to conserve moisture. Underwatering is another frequent cause—if the soil dries out too much between waterings, the plant may respond by curling its leaves. In contrast, overwatering and poor drainage can lead to root stress, which can also cause curling. Additionally, exposure to cold drafts, direct sunlight, or water with high levels of chlorine or fluoride can stress the plant and trigger leaf curling. To fix the issue, maintain high humidity (above 50%), water consistently with filtered or rainwater, and place the plant in bright, indirect light away from cold air or direct sun. Repot if the soil isn’t draining well. Once the stressors are resolved, new growth should appear healthy and flat.
