Ponytail Palm, Pony Palm, Fox Tail Palm

Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly known as the Ponytail Palm, is an attractive, small palm that is often grown as a potted plant. It features a trunk which has a prominent, swollen base and long, narrow, dark green leaves which are often curly. The foliage emerges as a plume, almost like a fountain of water. It can reach 3 m tall and 2 m wide but usually grows a lot smaller in a pot. Beaucarnea recurvata is frequently grown as a potted plant, added to tropical plantings, grown in large planters, or added to a mixed planting in frost-free locations.

How to grow Beaucarnea recurvata?

Beaucarnea recurvata thrives in well-draining soil and requires a sunny, warm position—ideally with bright indirect light indoors or full sun outdoors in frost-free areas. It’s a drought-tolerant plant thanks to its swollen base, which stores water. Use a sandy or cactus potting mix, and make sure the container has good drainage. Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, and avoid letting the plant sit in water. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, such as root rot. It prefers temperatures above 10°C, so in cooler climates, it's best grown as a container plant that can be brought indoors during winter. Fertilise with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer, but only occasionally. It’s a slow grower but very low maintenance. Repot only when root-bound, typically every few years. Trim dead or brown leaf tips to keep the plant looking tidy.

Beaucarnea recurvata care

Beaucarnea recurvata, or Ponytail Palm, is an easy-care plant that thrives in bright, indirect light indoors or full sun outdoors in mild climates. It prefers a well-draining cactus or succulent mix and should be watered only when the soil is completely dry—typically every few weeks. Overwatering is the most common issue, so always ensure the pot has good drainage. This plant enjoys warm conditions above 10°C and tolerates low humidity, making it ideal for indoor environments. Feed sparingly with a diluted liquid fertiliser during spring and summer, and repot only when root-bound, as it prefers to be slightly pot-bound. Though generally pest-free, occasional mealybugs or spider mites can be managed with an insecticidep. Its bulbous base stores water, helping it withstand dry periods, and only minimal pruning is needed to remove any brown leaf tips.

Is Beaucarnea recurvata safe for cats?

Yes, Beaucarnea recurvata (Ponytail Palm) is considered non-toxic to cats, according to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). It's safe to keep around pets, although chewing on the leaves may still cause mild digestive upset or vomiting due to irritation—not toxicity.

Does Beaucarnea recurvata flower?

Yes, Beaucarnea recurvata can flower, but it may not flower when grown indoors. When it does bloom, it produces a tall stalk with clusters of small, creamy-white flowers. Flowering typically occurs on mature plants, often older than 10 years, and more commonly when grown outdoors in warm climates with plenty of sun. The flowers are not particularly fragrant or showy, and after blooming, the plant may enter a slower growth phase.

What soil should I use for Beaucarnea recurvata?

For Beaucarnea recurvata, use a well-draining, sandy soil mix—ideally a cactus or succulent potting mix. These mixes are designed to prevent excess moisture, which is crucial for avoiding root rot.
