Commonly known as the Ponytail Palm, this is an attractive, herbaceous perennial often grown as a potted plant. It features a trunk which has a prominent, swollen base and long, narrow, dark green leaves which are often curly. The foliage emerges as a plume, almost like a fountain of water. It can reach 3 m tall and 2 m wide but usually grows a lot smaller in our climate. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, frost-free, sheltered site. It will tolerate extended dry periods once established. The Ponytail Palm is frequently grown as a potted plant, added to tropical plantings, grown in large planters, or added to a mixed planting in frost-free locations.
