How to grow the Variegated Monstera in NZ

The Variegated Monstera (Albo Variegata) grows best in New Zealand in a warm, bright spot with indirect light to maintain its striking variegation. Plant it in a free-draining potting mix rich in organic matter and provide support with a moss pole or trellis as it climbs. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, avoiding soggy conditions, and increase humidity with misting or a humidifier. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer for strong growth.

Variegated Monstera care tips

Variegated Monstera (Albo Variegata) needs bright, indirect light to keep its variegation vibrant, as too little light can cause the white areas to revert. Water when the top layer of soil has dried, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Use a well-draining potting mix and provide a moss pole or trellis for climbing. Maintain higher humidity with regular misting and keep it away from cold drafts. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

Variegated Monstera Size

A Variegated Monstera (Albo Variegata) can grow 2–3 metres tall indoors in New Zealand when supported by a moss pole or trellis. Its large, fenestrated leaves can reach 30–50 cm long, with mature plants producing even larger foliage. Growth is moderate, with new leaves emerging regularly during spring and summer when given bright, indirect light, good humidity, and regular feeding.

Can you make a Monstera variegated?

No, you cannot make a Monstera variegated. Variegation in Monstera plants, such as the Albo Variegata, is caused by a natural genetic mutation that affects chlorophyll production in the leaves. This trait cannot be created through care, pruning, or propagation from a fully green plant. To grow a variegated Monstera, you must start with a plant that already carries the variegated genetics, either through propagation from a variegated parent or by purchasing an established variegated plant.
