Tillandsia oaxacana

Air Plant

Commonly known as “Air Plants”, these amazing plants grow without the need for soil. They are naturally found growing in trees and the like where they extract moisture and nutrients from the air and occasional rain. They have short and stiff, green-grey leaves with a pointed end, and are borne off a thick stem. During summer they will often bear a pretty, purple flower. It typically grows as a spreading mound to eventually reach 20 cm tall and 40 cm wide but with favourable growing conditions can spread further. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is positioned in partial shade on a well-drained site that receives occasional moisture. Having a good air flow and some humidity is essential. Air Plants are often used as indoor plants or placed on tree branches outdoors and are well suited to growing on a desk in an office. They will benefit from the occasional misting with water.
