How to grow Thymus lanuginosus in NZ

Thymus lanuginosus grows best in a sunny position with well drained soil. It thrives in free draining conditions and performs exceptionally well in rock gardens, raised beds, and dry garden settings. Water regularly during establishment but only occasionally once plants are established. Adding compost before planting improves soil structure while maintaining drainage. Avoid overly wet conditions, particularly during winter, to ensure healthy growth and long term performance.

Thymus lanuginosus care tips

Thymus lanuginosus is easy to maintain and requires very little ongoing care. Feed lightly in spring with compost or a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a dense appearance and encourage fresh foliage. Avoid excessive watering, as this plant prefers drier conditions once established. Remove weeds while plants establish to encourage rapid coverage. Its hardy nature makes it an excellent choice for low maintenance gardens.

Thymus lanuginosus size, spacing, and growth rate

Thymus lanuginosus typically grows to around 3 to 8 centimetres tall and spreads 30 to 60 centimetres wide, forming a dense carpet of soft foliage. Growth is moderate, with plants gradually spreading to create attractive groundcover. Space plants approximately 25 to 35 centimetres apart when mass planting. This spacing allows healthy airflow while enabling plants to fill gaps efficiently and develop into a continuous and textured display.

Landscaping uses for Thymus lanuginosus

Thymus lanuginosus is ideal for rock gardens, pathways, edging, groundcover planting, containers, and between paving stones. The soft woolly foliage provides year round texture and creates a distinctive contrast with other plants and hard landscaping elements. Its low growing habit makes it useful for covering sunny areas with minimal maintenance. Whether planted in small groups or large drifts, it adds texture, colour, and visual interest to the landscape.
