Verbena bonariensis (Tall Verbena)

How to grow Verbena bonariensis in NZ

To grow Verbena bonariensis successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. Plant in spring once the risk of frost has passed, spacing plants about 40 cm apart to allow airflow. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Deadheading spent flowers encourages continuous blooming. In cooler regions, protect young plants from frost or treat them as annuals. Self-seeding is common so that new plants may appear naturally each season.

Verbena bonariensis plant care tips for NZ

Verbena bonariensis thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and requires minimal care once established. Water during dry spells and deadhead to prolong flowering. Cut back in winter to tidy the plant and encourage new growth. It tolerates light frosts and may self-seed freely. A light spring feed can support growth, though it's not essential. This hardy plant is generally pest-free, making it an easy and rewarding choice for New Zealand gardens.

Verbena bonariensis size, spacing, and growth rate

Verbena bonariensis typically grows to 1.2 to 1.8 metres tall and 45 to 60 cm wide, forming a tall and airy clump. Plants should be spaced about 40 to 50 cm apart to allow for good airflow and natural spread. It has a moderate to fast growth rate, reaching full size within one growing season in ideal conditions. While technically a perennial, it often self-seeds and reappears year after year in New Zealand gardens.
