Tulbaghia Dark Star, commonly known as the Society Garlic plant, is grown for its showy and fragrant flowers. Clusters of lilac-pink flowers are borne from summer until autumn on stems that rise above the foliage. These are held above the narrow, dark green, strap like foliage which releases a garlic odour when bruised. This herbaceous perennial grows as a clump to about 40 cm tall and 50 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of mild frost and may die back during winter to regrow again when conditions warm.
