Libertia paniculata is a variety of the commonly known, NZ Iris or Mikoikoi, and is grown for its pretty flowers. The flowers are pure white and held on slender stems among the leaves through spring and summer. They result in green seed capsules which mature orange. Plants have upright, dark green, sword-like leaves. It grows as a clump to about to 60 cm tall and the same wide but will colonise a larger area with its spreading roots. Best performance with Mikoikoi is achieved when they are planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, though they are tolerant of coastal conditions, cool climates, and a range of soil conditions barring the extremes of wet and dry. This NZ Iris is commonly mass planted, added to a mixed planting, used in borders, planted around the base of a larger tree, grown in a container, or planted around the pool or barbecue area. Libertia paniculata makes a great addition to a NZ garden.
