Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse'

How to grow Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' in NZ

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter. Improve the soil before planting with compost to enhance fertility and drainage. Water regularly during establishment and maintain even soil moisture during dry periods. Avoid areas that remain waterlogged, as healthy drainage is important for root development. A sheltered location will help preserve the vibrant foliage colours and encourage strong growth throughout the year.

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' care tips

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' is easy to care for and requires minimal maintenance. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage development. Water during prolonged dry periods, especially for container grown plants. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years can improve vigour and ensure the plant continues to perform strongly.

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' typically grows to around 0.3 to 0.4 m tall and spreads 0.45 to 0.6 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually forms a dense mound of colourful foliage. Space plants approximately 0.4 to 0.5 m apart when planting in borders or mass displays. Adequate spacing allows good airflow and gives each plant room to develop its full shape. The bold foliage quickly creates visual impact and adds structure to planting schemes.

Landscaping uses for Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse'

Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings. Its dramatic foliage colours provide excellent contrast with green shrubs and flowering plants, helping create depth and texture in the landscape. This variety is particularly effective when planted in groups where the unique leaf colouring can be fully appreciated. It also works well beneath trees, along pathways, and around outdoor living spaces where year round interest is desired.
