“Northern Exposure Black” is an herbaceous perennial grown for its richly coloured foliage. The leaves are deep purple-black, wavy, and relatively large. They are adorned with tall flower spikes in summer which produce small, cream-coloured flowers. It typically grows to 30 cm tall and 40 cm wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of short periods of dry, cool climates, and moderate frost, though in these conditions it may die back during winter to regrow in spring. “Northern Exposure Black” is commonly used for adding colour, used to provide a colour contrast, included in borders or mixed plantings, added to cottage and tropical gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas.
