Heuchera 'Dark Secret'

How to grow Heuchera 'Dark Secret' in NZ

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter. Improve the planting area with compost before planting to enhance soil fertility and drainage. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain even moisture during dry periods. Avoid planting in areas that remain waterlogged, as poor drainage can affect root health. A sheltered location helps preserve foliage quality and encourages strong growth throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' care tips

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' requires only minimal maintenance to remain healthy and attractive. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage development and flowering. Water during prolonged dry weather, particularly for plants growing in containers. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years helps maintain vigour and ensures continued strong performance.

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' typically grows to around 0.25 to 0.4 m tall and spreads approximately 0.35 to 0.5 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually develops into a dense mound of colourful foliage. Space plants around 0.35 to 0.45 m apart when creating borders or mass plantings. Adequate spacing encourages healthy airflow and allows each plant to develop its full shape, resulting in a more attractive and longer lasting display within the landscape.

Landscaping uses for Heuchera 'Dark Secret'

Heuchera 'Dark Secret' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings. The dark foliage creates dramatic contrast against silver, green, and golden leaved plants, adding depth and sophistication to garden designs. This variety is particularly effective when planted in groups where the foliage colour can be fully appreciated. It also performs well beneath trees, along pathways, and around outdoor living spaces, providing year round colour, texture, and visual interest.
