Gazania 'Brick Red'

How to grow Gazania 'Brick Red' in NZ

Gazania 'Brick Red' grows best in full sun and free draining soil. A warm, open position encourages abundant flowering and compact growth. Plant into well prepared soil and water regularly while the root system establishes. Once established, plants tolerate dry conditions well and require less frequent watering. Avoid heavy or consistently waterlogged soils, particularly during wet New Zealand winters. Apply a general garden fertiliser during spring if additional growth is required. Mulching lightly around plants can help suppress weeds, but avoid creating excessively damp conditions around the crown.

Gazania 'Brick Red' care tips

Gazania 'Brick Red' is easy to maintain once established in a sunny, free draining position. Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly when plants are grown in containers, but avoid overwatering. Remove spent flowers regularly to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further blooming. Trim back older or untidy foliage as required to promote fresh growth. A light application of general garden fertiliser during spring can support healthy flowering. Keep weeds controlled around the plants and ensure good drainage throughout winter to help maintain vigorous and attractive growth.

Gazania 'Brick Red' size, spacing, and growth rate

Gazania 'Brick Red' forms a compact, spreading plant that generally reaches around 20 to 30 cm tall and approximately 30 to 40 cm wide. It has a moderate to fast growth rate in warm, sunny conditions and quickly develops into a colourful ground covering display. Space plants approximately 30 to 40 cm apart for borders or mass planting so they can fill out without excessive crowding. Its low growing habit makes Gazania 'Brick Red' particularly useful for edging, rock gardens, banks, containers, and the front of sunny mixed borders.

Landscaping uses for Gazania 'Brick Red'

Gazania 'Brick Red' is an excellent landscaping plant for adding vibrant colour to sunny New Zealand gardens. Its low, spreading habit makes it ideal for edging pathways, filling rock gardens, covering banks, and creating colourful mass plantings. It also performs well in pots and containers for patios and outdoor living areas. The brick red flowers provide strong contrast with silver foliage, ornamental grasses, and green ground covers. Gazania 'Brick Red' is particularly useful in coastal and dry garden settings where a hardy, colourful, and relatively low maintenance plant is required.
