Dietes grandiflora, commonly known as the Fairy Iris, is a popular variety of Iris because of its eye-catching flowers. The showy flowers are white and marked with yellow and violet. These are produced on slender stems through spring and summer amidst the foliage. The foliage comprises narrow and sword-like, dark green leaves which are held densely and complement the flowers nicely. This herbaceous perennial typically grows to 70 cm tall and 40 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of wind, frost, cool climates, and dry periods, with storage roots enabling it to regrow and expand each year if it dies back during winter. The Fairy Iris is commonly used in cottage gardens, public gardens, mixed plantings, borders, or mass planted on a bank. This is a great plant for using anywhere a tough, yet attractive specimen is required and for that reason it is often planted around commercial properties or along roadsides. Dietes grandiflora is favoured by landscape designers across NZ due to its brilliant aesthetics, hardy nature, and great form.
