Growing Convolvulus mauritanicus Successfully in NZ

To grow Convolvulus mauritanicus successfully in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny position with well-drained soil. It thrives in dry, exposed, and coastal conditions, making it ideal for use on banks, walls, and in pots. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage new growth. This hardy plant thrives in poor soils and requires minimal fertilisation, making it an excellent low-maintenance option.

Convolvulus mauritanicus care tips

Convolvulus mauritanicus is easy to care for. Plant it in full sun with well-drained soil and water it regularly until it is established. Once settled, it becomes drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal attention. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage more blooms. It performs well in coastal and windy areas and does not require heavy feeding. A light mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds without crowding the base of the plant.

Plant Size and Spacing

Convolvulus mauritanicus typically grows to about 20 cm tall and can spread up to 1 metre wide. Space plants approximately 80 to 100 cm apart to allow for full coverage and healthy air circulation. Its trailing habit makes it ideal for cascading over walls, covering banks, or spilling from containers and hanging baskets.
