Muehlenbeckia axillaris, commonly known as Creeping Wire Vine or Pohuehue, is a low growing, groundcover plant. It forms a dense mat of wiry stems carrying tiny, glossy green leaves. During the colder months the foliage tends to develop bronze tones. Masses of small, cream-coloured flowers are borne through summer and result in small, white berries in autumn. This NZ native typically grows to 20 cm tall and 1 m wide, performing best when planted in in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. The Creeping Wire Vine is tolerant of extended dry periods, coastal conditions, moderate wind, frost, and cool climates. This plant is great for covering large areas such as a bank and makes for an effective and attractive ground cover. Muehlenbeckia axillaris is a low maintenance plant is also well suited to urban plantings that experience a reasonable amount of foot traffic. It is favoured by landscape designers across NZ.
