How to grow Ajuga reptans 'Alba' in NZ

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' grows best in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, well drained soil. Choose a sheltered location where the soil retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly during establishment to help the plant settle and spread reliably. This variety performs well in cool, damp NZ conditions and is ideal for shaded garden beds, woodland areas, and spaces beneath shrubs or trees.

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' care tips

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' is very low maintenance once established. Keep the soil slightly moist during dry spells to maintain lush foliage. Remove old flower spikes once blooming has finished and trim back any straggly runners to keep the mat even. Apply mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture. A light application of gentle fertiliser can be used to encourage strong growth and bright, healthy foliage.

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' size spacing and growth rate

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' grows to around ten centimetres tall and spreads up to sixty centimetres wide as it forms a dense ground cover. Space plants twenty to thirty centimetres apart for full coverage. Growth is fast in moist, shaded areas and moderate in drier conditions. Once established, it spreads easily via runners and forms a thick, attractive carpet that adds brightness and texture to darker parts of the garden.

Ajuga reptans 'Alba' is ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and planting beneath trees or shrubs. Its clean white flowers create a fresh contrast against darker foliage and brighten otherwise dim areas.
