Acaena inermis ‘purpurea is a hardy, NZ native groundcover. The foliage comprises delicate, fern like leaves which are purple and become more intensely coloured when exposed to sun. This impressive plant grows to just 10 cm tall and will eventually spread to 1 m in diameter. It thrives in exposed positions and poor soil conditions where other plants will struggle but does require good drainage and moisture during dry periods. It is tolerant of moderate frost as well as coastal conditions. ‘Purpurea is commonly used in rock gardens, planted between paving stones, or used in borders. A mass planting will give a spectacular display and the leaf colouring allows stunning contrasts with lighter coloured rocks and pavers.
