Westringia fruticosa is a popular choice in landscaping projects. It makes a beautiful hedge and a lush backdrop for smaller plants. It can also be included in a mixed planting or maintained in a container. This shrub is well suited to coastal and modern gardens where is brings colour and texture to a space coupled with a hardy nature. It is the gorgeous foliage, elegant flowers, and versatility of this plant that makes it a popular choice in landscaping.

How far apart to plant Westringia fruticosa

Westringia fruticosa can be grown as a hedge or as standalone plants. For a hedge, the spacing is generally 50 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can shorten the spacing to 40 cm. As standalone plants that don’t merge, the minimum spacing is 1.8 m apart. If the goal is to achieve an informal hedge such that the natural form of the plants is realised and with some merging, the recommended spacing is 1.2 m apart.

How to grow a Westringia fruticosa hedge

Westringia fruticosa makes a wonderful hedge 80-1.3 m tall. The spacing used is generally 50 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can shorten the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in and this can cause frustration. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and in doing so, they push each other upwards. Therefore, The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing hedge. Start trimming the sides of the hedge early rather than waiting for it to grow to the target width. This helps keep the hedge bushier and narrower also.

Westringia fruticosa grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of good drainage as plants can become diseased and die if drainage is poor or they are constantly waterlogged.
