Scleranthus biflorus (Cushion Plant)

Scleranthus biflorus, commonly known as the Cushion plant, is a New Zealand native with spreading, moss-like properties, but it is not a moss! It features narrow, dense, bright-green leaves and is commonly called the Cushion Plant due to its appearance. It forms a thick mat and quickly covers the ground like a carpet as it grows to 15 cm tall and 75 cm wide. Scleranthus biflorus is commonly used as a ground cover, included in a rock garden planting, or planted around the base of smaller shrubs.

Growing Scleranthus biflorus Successfully in NZ

To grow Scleranthus biflorus successfully in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained soil. This low-growing, mat-forming groundcover prefers slightly acidic soil and does best in rockeries, borders, or between pavers. Avoid areas with excessive moisture or poor drainage, as root rot can occur. Water regularly during establishment, then only in dry periods. Mulching is not usually needed, but keeping the area weed-free helps it spread evenly. It's a hardy, low-maintenance plant once established.

Scleranthus biflorus Care Tips

Scleranthus biflorus is easy to care for and thrives with minimal maintenance. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, then only during prolonged dry spells. It prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy or waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. No pruning is required, but trimming around the edges can help maintain a tidy form. Keep the area free of weeds to allow the plant to spread naturally.

Plant Size and Spacing

Scleranthus biflorus forms a dense, cushion-like mat that typically grows 2 to 5 centimetres tall and spreads up to 50 centimetres wide. When planting in groups or as groundcover, space plants about 30 to 40 centimetres apart. This allows each plant room to spread while creating a seamless, moss-like carpet over time.
