How to grow Prostrate Rosemary (Rosmarinus prostratus) in NZ

Plant Prostrate Rosemary in full sun and free-draining soil for the best flowering and foliage quality. It tolerates poor soils, wind, and coastal conditions. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in prolonged dry periods. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid heavy feeding to preserve flavour and bloom quality.

Rosmarinus prostratus care tips

Ensure plants have room to spread naturally. Avoid overwatering and waterlogged soils, as rosemary prefers dry conditions. Harvest sprigs regularly for cooking, which also keeps plants tidy. This variety is frost-hardy in most NZ regions and requires minimal maintenance.

Rosmarinus prostratus size, spacing, and growth rate

Prostrate Rosemary typically grows 30–50 cm tall and spreads 1.5–2 m wide. Space plants 1–1.2 m apart for continuous groundcover. Growth is moderate to fast in warm, sunny locations.
